William James "Willem" Dafoe (born July 22, ) is an American-Italian actor. He is known for his distinct gravelly voice, and has received multiple accolades, including nominations for four Academy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. Willem Dafoe, original name William J. Dafoe, (born July 22, , Appleton, Wisconsin, U.S.), American actor known for his versatility and willingness to appear in controversial roles. Dafoe, the son of a surgeon and a nurse, was one of seven children. Willem was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Muriel Isabel (Sprissler), a nurse, and William Alfred Dafoe, a surgeon. He is of mostly German, Irish, Scottish, and English descent. He and his wife, director Giada Colagrande, have made three films together: Padre, A Woman, and Before It Had A Name.

It's really true; there's no accounting for taste. Sometimes you make very interesting movies that aren't meant for everybody.

But this is a capitalist society, so everything conspires to put value on whether it sells or not. While we have a very strong popular culture, the roots of our culture are very shallow, and we put emphasis on how a movie does as far as the box office goes.

Many years ago, it would have been vulgar to print box-office grosses in the paper. Now The New York Times does it, and it's the big story for people interested in arts and entertainment on Monday.

Which is why emphasis has shifted away from filmmakers and fallen on movie stars and business people. Any actor who tells you that he makes choices, absolutely, is wrong.

You find work and work finds you. When you look back at your experiences, it's true that sometimes the most horrendous experiences can translate into being your best work.

All the time, as an actor, you want to be asking what's next and where things are going. If you're not asking those questions you're not growing. Sometimes I have a desire to control what I do a little bit, especially when I do a smaller movie.

But basically, my impulses are the impulses of a child. I like being the thing itself. I don't like thinking about it.

And that doesn't mean I'm not analytical or that I'm anti-intellectual. I'm not trying to say I'm a totally intuitive kind of guy.

It's just that my real pleasure, where I feel vital and everything drops away, is when I'm in the middle of doing it, and I look for that opportunity untainted by other responsibilities.

But I'm getting too serious. When I try to explain what I do, I get a little bit disgusted with myself because I come off too earnest.

In the simplest terms, it's a pleasure to borrow someone else's body and someone else's life. That's the craft, and it's a bit like voodoo, because you don't know exactly how you do it.

It's one of those invented things. I spend a lot of time in Germany so it's in my head. I didn't feel the need to go to a dialogue coach and be very strict with it because that's not in the spirit of how it should be approached.

My take was that it should be played with and invented. It's my idea of a Germanish accent - On his accent in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Sometimes I envy their power and money, and other times I feel sorry for them since they have a gun to their head.

They have so much to protect that they have to be very careful, thus very certain every step of the way, and that leaves out a lot of work of any freshness.

I don't want to do that - I'm not that kind of actor. On principle I don't have favorites. To pass judgment on something you've done is a face-saving act, and I think it kinda stinks.

There are all kinds of movies, all kinds of impulses and all kinds of needs for people watching movies, and sometimes I'll do a movie that I don't particularly care for, but then I'll run into someone that it speaks to and they love it.

So for me, to give my personal take on it, could mean ruining that movie for someone else, because they can find pleasure where I can't.

Most of the work happens when you're on the set. Dafoe has dual citizenship of the United States and Italy. William James Dafoe [2] was born in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The film was panned by critics and performed poorly at the box office, with some audience members laughing during the sex scenes. Dafoe played John Clark , a CIA agent conducting a covert operation against a drug cartel in Colombia with Jack Ryan.

The film was met with a mixed reception from critics, although Caryn James of The New York Times felt that Dafoe's "stunningly sharp, sympathetic portrait raises the film above a script that is full of serious holes and stilted dialogue".

In his first of three film appearances in , Dafoe made a cameo appearance as an electrician in the biographical drama Basquiat. The English Patient was filmed in Tuscany , where Dafoe said he particularly enjoyed the "quiet moments in the monastery between shoots".

Although the film was largely dismissed by critics, [61] critic David Stratton found there to be "compensation" in the performances.

In , Dafoe gave a supporting performance in David Cronenberg 's Existenz , a science fiction thriller in which he played a gas station owner named Gas.

He played an eccentric, gay FBI agent assigned with investigating a series of murders committed by the MacManus brothers played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus , twins who are acting as vigilantes in Boston , Massachusetts after an act of self-defense.

The Boondock Saints was negatively received by film critics, largely for its extreme violence and lack of emotional depth, though some critics praised Dafoe's role in the film.

In his first film of the s, Dafoe was featured in a supporting role in American Psycho as a private investigator investigating the disappearance of a co-worker of Patrick Bateman played by Christian Bale , an investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer.

The film was positively received by critics and Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times wrote that "Dafoe steals the picture with his comic timing".

Dafoe's co-star John Malkovich portrayed the film's director, F. The film delves into fiction when, over the course of Nosferatu ' s production, the cast and crew come to discover that Schreck is actually a vampire himself.

Much of the film's critical praise went to Dafoe; Roger Ebert wrote that Dafoe "embodies the Schreck of Nosferatu so uncannily that when real scenes from the silent classic are slipped into the frame, we don't notice a difference".

Dafoe took on two leading roles in , both of which were as priests. In the drama Pavilion of Women , he played an American priest living in China who falls in love with a local married woman played by the film's screenwriter Luo Yan while giving her son a Western education.

Dafoe played the Norman Osborn incarnation of the Green Goblin, the billionaire founder and owner of the corporation Oscorp , becoming the Green Goblin after testing an unstable strength enhancer on himself, turning him insane and making him extremely powerful.

Osborn is a family friend of Spider-Man's secret identity Peter Parker as Osborn's son, Harry Osborn played by James Franco , is a close friend of Parker.

The role required Dafoe to wear an uncomfortable costume and mask that made it impossible to emote using his face, confining Dafoe to convey emotion through his voice and head movements.

The film received mixed reviews, although Peter Travers felt that he added a note of "vulnerability to the menace he has made his stock in trade".

The cameo was suggested by Dafoe, comparing it to the ghost of Hamlet's father visiting his son to ask him to avenge his death. He played the "hilariously doltish" German first mate of a research vessel owned by the eponymous lead character, who is played by Bill Murray.

With the avant-garde drama Manderlay in , Dafoe began another actor-director collaboration, this time with Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier.
